This is one way to water the garden. After the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred passed through the area on August 17, 2021 Walnut Creek rose quickly and out of its banks. I was watching from the kitchen window as the water rose up over the back retaining wall and flooded the vegetable garden. To get an idea as to how much water is going by here, consider that in the photo above, the bank of the creek is four feet beyond the back garden wall and drops down over four feet to what is the typical water level. |

This was the high water mark since I'd lived here and this scene was a little disconcerting, but I knew that the rain was forecast to stop within the hour. From where I'm located, several miles downstream from the origin of Walnut Creek, high water begins to recede minutes after rain stops and that's what happened. I was actually more concerned that the garden area would fill with mud then with anything being washed away, but that didn't happen either. And other than some debris piles scattered though the butternut squash, the vegetables seemed none the worse for the flooding. |
